The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the death of Coltyn T. Nowatzke, 27, who was being held in LaPorte County Jail.

It was around 8 a.m. on Tuesday, May 7, when an inmate assigned to the same cell as Nowatzke alerted jail staff of an emergency.

Jail Division Deputies, along with medical staff, responded and found Nowatzke unresponsive.

Deputies and a nurse immediately began to render aid and resuscitation efforts.

Members of the LaPorte County Emergency Medical Services arrived and transported the inmate to Northwest Health – LaPorte Campus. Nowatzke was later pronounced as dead.

Nowatzke was arrested on May 3 for a Violation of Probation / Petition to Revoke Suspended Sentence warrant that had been issued through Superior Court IV last month. He was booked into the LaPorte County later that evening where he remained housed until Tuesday.
