Elkhart Schools employee arrested after allegedly bringing gun to Mary Beck Elementary

An Elkhart Community Schools employee has been arrested after allegedly bringing a gun to Mary Beck Elementary School. The arrest happened around 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 13.

The person’s name hasn’t been shared yet.

There was no report of the circumstances in which the employee was discovered to have had the weapon.

The prosecutor’s office is reviewing the case for possible charges.

The following statement was issued by the Elkhart Police Department regarding the incident and arrest:

We have received several media inquiries about an incident that took place earlier this morning at Mary Beck Elementary School, 818 McDonald St, Elkhart. We can confirm that the Elkhart Police Department was notified and arrested a staff member that had brought a handgun into the school.

The Elkhart Police Department was notified by the school district, and one of our School Resource officers did place a staff member under arrest at Mary Beck Elementary School at around 9:30 this morning. The staff member was transported to the Elkhart County Jail, and this arrest will be forwarded to the Elkhart County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review of criminal charges. EPD will release the name of the individual arrested if and when a judicial officer finds probable cause for the arrest and sets bail. We would refer you to the school district for any further questions about the staff member’s role at the school and/or employment status.

We will release further information as we are able to do so. Please be advised that under Indiana law an individual is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
