A driver is in custody following a serious injury crash that injured multiple people on South Bend’s southeast side.

On Wednesday, May 15, around 3:40 p.m., South Bend Police were called to the area of Ewing Avenue and Marine Street on the report of a vehicle crash with entrapment.

Upon arrival, officers observed the crash involved two vehicles – an SUV carrying a driver with three passengers and a sedan carrying a lone driver.

Two people from the SUV were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, including a young child. A baby and another passenger inside the SUV did not require hospitalization.

The driver of the sedan was also taken to the hospital with multiple injuries.

None of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

A preliminary investigation suggests impairment likely played a role in the crash. The driver of the sedan is in police custody while being treated for his injuries and is expected to be transported to the St. Joseph County Jail upon his release from the hospital.

Ewing Avenue between Miami and Leer Streets was shut down for several hours as police investigated,.
