Penn High School alum and Granger native Sarah Hildebrandt is an Olympic champion.
She defeated Yusneylys Guzman Lopez of Cuba 3-0 in the gold medal match in the women’s wrestling freestyle 50 kg competition on Wednesday. She made it to the gold medal match after going 3-0 in her matches on Tuesday.
Hildebrandt is the fourth woman to win an Olympic gold in wrestling for Team USA.
“We make this so serious and it can be miserable sometimes. It’s already such a hard sport. I love this sport. It’s so much fun. I’m going to enjoy every second of it and take all of it in. I think I did a great job of that this week,” said Hildebrandt to NBC after her victory.
Hildebrandt said her family and her high school coach have been in Paris supporting her every step of the way.
Hildebrant is a four-time Senior World Championships medalist, a six-team U.S. World Team member and a seven-time Pan-American Championships gold medalist. She also wrestled at King University where she was a two-time Women’s College Wrestling Association national champion and a four-time finalist.
In 2023, Hildebrandt won the gold medal in her event at the Pan American Wrestling Championships held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
