A $124,500 grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will help make Elkhart’s public housing safer and healthier.

Elkhart Housing Authority is the only one in Indiana to get this funding, out of 22 nationwide recipients.

Officials say these grants are key to keeping families safe.

The executive director added that they apply for every grant to improve the conditions for residents.

Making housing safer should start with making families sounder. Section 8 is not the way to go. We need to stop paying for failure.
