Construction of the first phase of the Lakeshore Trail is set to start up next year.

The Southwest Michigan Planning Commission is looking to raise the last of the necessary funding for the planned trail along M-63 that will connect several parks and beaches along the shore of Lake Michigan.

WSJM reports that planners are still seeking about $100,000 , and are hopeful that a local donor might come forward to match donations. The backers of the Lakeshore Trail have more than $3 million in federal, state and local grants in place.

Phase One connects existing beaches and parks in St. Joe and Benton Harbor.
