39 pardons were granted by President Biden on Thursday. One of those was for a woman from Indianapolis.

Biden pardoned 39-year-old Emily Good Nelson was pardoned for non-violent drug offenses and was arrested at the age of 19. After she was released from prison, Good Nelson earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees and now works in the health care field in Indiana.

“She has spoken publicly about drug use and has volunteered as a counselor at an in-patient psychiatric facility,” Pres. Biden stated in the pardon. “She is described as kind, committed to recovery and helping others, and as someone with tremendous talent and ability.”

This is the largest single-day act of clemency in modern history.

Biden also commuted the sentences of about 1,500 people who were released from prison and placed on home confinement during the coronavirus pandemic.

“For far too long, our criminal justice system has closed doors to opportunity for too many people who should have the chance to once again participate in daily life and contribute to our communities,” said White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
