A man with an outstanding felony warrant was arrested early Saturday, Jan. 4, after a SWAT team was deployed to a residence in the 200 block of N 2nd St.

The incident began around 1:45 a.m. when Elkhart Police responded to a welfare check at 220 W Jackson St. A woman was reportedly knocking on doors and screaming for help. Officers found the woman and a man, who both reported being attacked by a known male suspect at a nearby home.

Police secured an arrest warrant for the suspect, later identified as 48-year-old Games Birkhead of Elkhart. They also discovered he had an unrelated felony warrant. When Birkhead refused to leave the residence, the Elkhart County Regional SWAT team was called in.

At 8:10 a.m., the SWAT team breached the home and arrested Birkhead without incident. He was medically cleared before being transported to the Elkhart County Jail. No injuries were reported.

During the investigation, police obtained a search warrant for the North 2nd Street residence, where items related to the case were seized.

Birkhead faces preliminary charges related to the battery incident, in addition to his outstanding warrant. The case has been forwarded to the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
