An Orange County deputy sheriff remains in critical condition after being shot multiple times during an early morning traffic stop. It happened on Friday, Jan. 3.
Deputy Zac Andry, 32, was assisting what appeared to be a disabled vehicle near the intersection of US Highway 150 and State Road 56 when the driver, Austin Schepers, 29, opened fire. Andry was struck four times, including once in the head, before Schepers fled the scene.
A multi-agency manhunt ensued, leading investigators to Louisville, Kentucky, where Schepers was located on January 4. According to authorities, Schepers was shot and killed during an exchange with law enforcement.
Deputy Andry is being treated at the University of Louisville Hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition. He is under sedation and on a ventilator as doctors monitor his progress. Medical staff have expressed cautious optimism, noting Andry’s resilience in his fight toward recovery.
The incident has shaken the tight-knit Orange County community, with colleagues and residents rallying around Andry and his family.
