17-year-old boy dead, juvenile suspect arrested after Mishawaka shooting

UPDATE: A 17-year-old boy is dead and a juvenile suspect has been taken into custody after a shooting in Mishawaka. It happened Wednesday night in the 200 block of Indiana Avenue. Officers arrived at the scene to find the victim with apparent life-threatening injuries. The victim, Takoda Simon Gallegos of Vandalia, Michigan died despite life-saving measures. A juvenile suspect has been identified and apprehended with help from the St. Joseph County Metro SWAT team. The juvenile is currently being held at the St. Joseph County Juvenile Justice Center.

ORIGINAL STORY: A fatal shooting occurred in the 200 North block of Indiana, prompting an investigation by the Mishawaka Police Department and a lockdown, nearby at Mishawka High School, where a girl’s basketball game was underway.

Officers responded to reports of a gunshot victim around 8:45 p.m. on Jan. 15, 2025. Initial claims suggested that a baby had been shot, but police determined upon arrival that this information was inaccurate.

Officers discovered a victim inside the home who was pronounced dead.

Authorities have not released the victim’s identity or any details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting, citing the ongoing investigation.
