A fatal shooting claimed the life of 17-year-old Takoda Gallegos on the evening of Wednesday, Jan. 15. The incident occurred around 8:45 p.m. inside a home in the 200 block of Indiana Avenue.

Hours after the shooting, the St. Joseph County Metro SWAT team detained the first juvenile suspect. The 14-year-old was taken to the Juvenile Justice Center, where the case will proceed through the juvenile court system.

Two days later, detectives from the Mishawaka Police Major Crimes Unit secured a sealed arrest warrant for the second suspect, identified as 17-year-old Latrell Vaughn. As an adult under Indiana law, Vaughn faces multiple charges in adult court, including murder, armed robbery, pointing a firearm, and a felony firearm enhancement. His arrest warrant, initially sealed, was unsealed following his capture in Mishawaka. Vaughn is being held at the St. Joseph County Jail.

The younger suspect, whose name is withheld due to his age, faces similar charges in juvenile court, including murder and armed robbery. Detention for the 14-year-old has already been approved.

A judge has determined probable cause for the charges against Vaughn, whose next court hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 1 p.m.

Investigators are urging anyone with information about the case to contact the Mishawaka Police Detective Bureau at 574-258-1684 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-342-STOP.
