A man from Greenwood was sentenced to 47 years in prison for the murder of his father in 2023.
Jacob Moran, 23, was sentenced on January 21, on several charges including murder and domestic battery.
In November of 2023, a Moran was convicted by a jury after a 4 day trial. Evidence in the case showed that Moran had been asked to leave his Dad’s home, where he had been living temporarily. Moran then became verbally and physically aggressive with his Dad before fleeing the scene. Moran showed back up to the scene and attacked his Dad before police were called. Before leaving a second time, Moran warned his father and step-mother that he would return with a gun. He did just that the same evening and shot his father in the back through a garage window.
Moran was later found in St. Joseph County, Michigan on August 29, 2023 along with the handgun he shot his father with.
Homicide Chief Deputy Prosecutor Matthew Kubacki argued for a minimum of 55-60 years in prison. Defense attorney Brian Alsip wanted a short sentence, citing Moran’s age and lack of criminal history.
Johnson County Lance Hamner said, “We asked the Court for an aggravated sentence because of the depraved nature of the murder and because of the lack of remorse on the part of the murderer. Although the Court did not hand down an aggravated sentence, I am pleased at least that this killer will serve nearly five decades in prison for what he did.”
