Fatal house fire on Superior Boulevard in Elkhart under investigation

A house fire in Elkhart claimed the life of one resident and caused extensive damage to a home on Superior Boulevard.

The Elkhart Fire Department responded to the blaze around 4 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, in the 100 block of Superior Blvd.

Crews arrived to find flames visible from the back of the two-story, wood-frame structure. Firefighters quickly deployed hoses and began attacking the fire from both the exterior and interior.

Rescue crews searched the home and found an occupant in a bedroom. Despite lifesaving efforts, the individual was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The fire, which originated in the kitchen, was brought under control by around 4:30 a.m.

Officials confirmed that smoke alarms were not present in the home, and the fire remains under investigation.

No other injuries were reported.

Authorities urge residents to check their smoke detectors and ensure they have working fire alarms in place.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
