There’s a new proposal in Michigan from a House Republican that would require anyone wishing to vote to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship when they register.

The proposed amendment to the state constitution is unlikely to pass the legislature with the required two-thirds support, according to Bridge Michigan. But conservatives already preparing for a petition drive to attempt to put the proposal before voters on the 2026 ballot.

It’s the latest in a growing movement in the US to create barriers to non-citizen voting, even though there is little evidence that a significant number of noncitizens attempt to vote.

Currently, however, federal law doesn’t require proof of citizenship to register.
