A new bill could raise your food delivery bill.

House Bill 1461, which includes 35 provisions, features one that would allow counties to impose a fee on deliveries from services like DoorDash and Amazon. Counties could charge between 50 cents and $1.00 per delivery, potentially raising nearly $200 million for road repairs by 2026.

However, an organization representing over 11,000 small businesses in Indiana says the majority of its members oppose the bill.

“This could stifle small businesses that are trying to remain competitive. This would also be another blow for everyone-consumers and businesses alike-that are currently struggling with inflationary pressures,” said the organization’s spokesperson.

Republican Jim Pressel, who wrote the bill, argues it could help fund crucial road repairs. “I just find it hard to believe that 0.50 on top of those fees would be cumbersome,” Pressel said.

The Roads and Transportation Committee did not vote on the bill during its meeting on Monday.
