John Shumate, 1970s Notre Dame basketball standout, passes away

A Notre Dame basketball legend passed away Monday morning.

John Shumate was a two-time All-American and Captain of the Fighting Irish Basketball Team in the early 1970s. At the end of his career, which was from 71 to 74, he averaged a double-double, with more than 22 points per game and over 11 rebounds.

His senior season saw a perfect 15-0 record at home and the end of UCLA’s 88-game win streak. He played five seasons in the NBA and was an assistant coach for the Irish in the 80s.

The 6’9″ center was inducted into the Ring of Honor at Purcell Pavilion in 2022.

Shumate was 72.
