St. Joseph County Councilwoman Amy Drake has officially announced her candidacy for chair of the county’s Republican Party, setting the stage for a leadership contest ahead of the party’s March 1 reorganization vote.
In a statement, Drake emphasized her passion for conservative principles and campaign strategy, highlighting her experience in local government and her commitment to strengthening the party’s message.
“I love running and winning races, messaging, and proclaiming our principles,” Drake said. “I hope that I have demonstrated my leadership through my work on the County Council-pushing forward a conservative agenda even when faced with opposition.”
Drake’s announcement comes as the party continues to reorganize following the resignation of former chairman Tyler Gillean, whom she accused of instigating internal divisions. Current chair Jackie Horvath, who took over after Gillean’s departure, has worked to stabilize the party, but Drake believes members are looking for an alternative in the upcoming election.
“As chair, I want to continue where Jackie left off and end some of the turmoil still lingering after Tyler’s exit,” she said. “A chair must boldly use her platform to communicate clearly.”
Drake also pledged to defend elected Republican officials, engage grassroots activists, and reinstate elected official updates at monthly GOP meetings. She expressed a desire to re-engage precinct committee members who were removed in past years, aiming to strengthen voter outreach and participation.
While addressing concerns about balancing her council duties with the role of party chair, Drake assured supporters she is up to the task.
“Like many women and mothers, I’m a multi-tasker,” she said. “Even while serving on the council, I’ve helped run campaigns-and won them.”
The reorganization vote is scheduled for March 1 at 9 a.m. at Villa Macri’s in Granger, with in-person voting required. Drake has also launched a campaign website, www.voteamydrake.com, and is accepting donations for future elections.
