Bird flu has killed nearly 1,500 sandhill cranes across Indiana, including at Fish Lake, where volunteers are removing the dead birds.
The Indiana DNR says this is the worst outbreak among cranes they’ve seen, with deaths reported in multiple counties.
Thousands of cranes have been migrating through Fish Lake in recent weeks, but more than 100 have died there.
While the risk to humans is low, officials advise using gloves, and proper disposal methods to prevent contamination.
