A Michigan City man was arrested Sunday after allegedly firing a gun during an argument near 524 E. 11th Street.
At approximately 4:25 p.m. on March 2, the FLOCK gunshot detection system alerted authorities to shots fired in the area. Shortly after, LaPorte County’s 911 dispatch received reports identifying the suspect as Michael Johnson, who was still nearby.
Officers from the Michigan City Police Department and a deputy from the Long Beach Police Department responded to the scene. Investigators determined that two men had been arguing after one accused the other of nearly hitting him with a vehicle. Johnson, who was not involved in the dispute, allegedly fired several shots from a handgun and then made verbal threats toward the driver. No injuries or property damage were reported.
Police recovered a 9mm semi-automatic handgun, spent shell casings, bullets, and other evidence. Investigators later determined Johnson was not legally allowed to possess a firearm. He was arrested on charges of Serious Violent Felon in Possession of a Firearm (Level 4 Felony), Intimidation (Level 5 Felony), and Criminal Recklessness (Level 6 Felony).
On March 3, the case was presented in LaPorte County Superior Court 1, where a judge found probable cause for the charges and set Johnson’s bond at $20,000 cash only.
