Indiana lawmakers wrapped up the new state budget with money set aside for the South Shore Line upgrade.

The General Assembly pledged up to $28 million to help speed up train travel between South Bend and Chicago.

South Shore Line leaders still need to secure $56 million in federal funding to complete the project.

Right now, trains leave from the east side of South Bend International Airport, adding extra time and distance to the trip.

President Mike Noland says a new alignment could cut up to 15 minutes off the ride.
