The Berrien County Health Department warns of Lyme Disease-carrying ticks in the state.
In recognition of Lyme Disease Awareness Month, they’re offering tips to prevent tick bites this season.
They say 81 out of Michigan’s 83 counties have a known risk of Lyme disease as of 2024. Ticks are often found in wooded, brushy areas or in leaf litter and are generally active during warmer months.
To help prevent bites, wear long, light-colored clothing to easily spot them. Examine clothing and pets after being outside, and use EPA-registered insect repellents.
Shower soon after coming indoors, and check your full body for ticks once you are inside. If you find a tick on yourself or a pet, use tweezers to grab the tick as close to the skin as possible and slowly pull straight up.
Wash the bite and your hands, and see your healthcare provider if you develop a rash or fever within several weeks of removing a tick.
