Mishawaka Avenue streetscape project to begin Monday

(Jon Zimney/95.3 MNC)
The City of South Bend will begin construction on the Mishawaka Avenue Streetscape Project on Monday, May 19. The project aims to improve walking and biking infrastructure, calm traffic, promote safety and encourage investment along Mishawaka Avenue between Beyer/Longfellow and Emerson avenues.
Streetscape improvements will include new curbs and sidewalks, new water main and storm sewers, new lighting, landscaping and street resurfacing. A raised intersection will also be constructed at Mishawaka and Beyer/Longfellow avenues. Once this section of Mishawaka Avenue reopens to full traffic, the street will be a three-lane corridor – two travel lanes with a center turn lane, on-street parking and bike lanes.
During construction, Mishawaka Avenue will be restricted to one westbound lane. Eastbound traffic will be detoured. Cross streets will be closed at Mishawaka Avenue. The eastbound Mishawaka Avenue ramp from Eddy Street/State Road 23 will also be closed. Eastbound traffic will detour down Sample Street to Lincoln Way East to Twyckenham Drive.
Construction is expected to be completed by the end of September, weather permitting. Work will be completed in two phases:
  • Phase One will focus on the south side of Mishawaka Avenue. Work is expected from May 19 through early August, weather permitting.
  • Phase Two will involve involves works on the north side of Mishawaka Avenue. Work is expected to occur between early August and the end of September, weather permitting.
Access to businesses will be maintained throughout the duration of the project.
