At least 75 homes were damaged and five people were hurt after powerful storms swept through southern Indiana Friday night.

Monroe County was one of the hardest-hit areas, where emergency crews spent the night helping people through road closures, downed trees, and significant structural damage.

In Monroe County, a 96-year-old man was taken to the hospital with a head injury that wasn’t life-threatening. Four others were also injured.

Damage was widespread along West State Road 45, Stanford Road, Elwren Road, Harmony Road, and Ison Road. Crews also reported heavy damage to the Ranchero Motel and the Clear Creek Post Office.

An American Red Cross shelter opened at Sherwood Oaks Christian Church to help those displaced by the storm.

The National Weather Service received reports of possible tornadoes in Monroe, Brown, and Greene counties. In Brown County, multiple homes were reportedly leveled.

Officials there warned residents to stay home due to fallen power lines and trees blocking several roads in the southern part of the county.

Linton, in Greene County, was also hit hard. Aerial images showed homes with missing roofs and debris scattered through neighborhoods.

Wind gusts up to 80 miles per hour were reported in parts of the state, along with hail the size of tennis balls.

By 10 p.m. Friday, PowerOutage.us reported more than 110,000 customers in Indiana without electricity, including large outages in Greene and White counties.

Dozens of counties-stretching from Boone to Warrick-were placed under a tornado watch earlier in the evening. Some have since been removed as the storm system moves east.

This latest round of severe weather left a visible path of destruction across southern Indiana, with emergency crews now shifting to cleanup and recovery.
