The Berrien County Health Department is offering safe food handling tips as many prepare for summer cookouts.
They’re hoping to help the community enjoy the season safely without the risk of foodborne illnesses at picnics and other gatherings.
They say to wash your hands often with warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds.
Clean all surfaces where food will be prepared or consumed, and clean cooking utensils after each use, especially when handling raw meat, eggs and seafood. Keep your cold food under 41 degrees until it is ready to be cooked or consumed, and separate beverages from food in order to keep them cold.
They also say to cook all meat and seafood at the recommended minimum temperature and pack raw meat and seafood separately. For more tips, visit the Health Department’s website.
