The School City of Mishawaka board has approved contracts for a $45 million rebuild.

The $45 million bond to finance a new Hums Elementary School was approved in March, and at the latest meeting of the board of trustees, the board gave the OK to award contracts.

The new building will replace the current one, which currently has minimal walls and few doors. Superintendent Theodore Stevens said the current design, which was built in 1970, turned out to be more distracting than innovative.

WNDU says the new building will also offer more safety and security.
