Dowagiac police investigating fatal shooting following weekend party

The Dowagiac Police Department is investigating a deadly shooting that occurred near Cherry and Halstead Streets.

Officers were dispatched to the area just before 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, after reports of gunfire. While canvassing the scene, authorities were informed that a gunshot victim had been dropped off at Ascension Borgess Lee Memorial Hospital.

According to police, the victim — a 19-year-old man from Benton Harbor — had been involved in a verbal altercation with another individual during a party in the area. The suspect allegedly pulled a firearm and fired multiple shots, striking the victim before fleeing the scene. The injured man ran from the area and was driven to the hospital by friends, where he later died from his injuries.

The victim’s identity has not yet been released, pending notification of family.

Dowagiac Police have identified a person of interest in the case: 24-year-old Demorrio Maurice Lowes of Cassopolis. Authorities are asking for the public’s help in locating him.
