A new grant will soon allow Benton Harbor to install solar panels at facilities.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy says eight communities are receiving the first Solar for Savings grants to support Michigan Solar for All pilot programs.

A total of $7.9 million will be awarded to help low-income participants save money by reducing energy costs. Grant totals have not yet been finalized but should be in the coming weeks.

WSJM says Benton Harbor will use the grant money to install solar power at city facilities with a goal of reducing water bills for residents.
