Suspect arraigned in Franklin Woods homicide

The man accused of murdering Courtney Hershberger in Niles Township was arraigned Wednesday in Berrien County Court.
33-year-old Rene Lopez Alvarado, of South Bend, faces charges of Homicide-Open Murder and Felony Firearms. His bond was set at $2 million, with the additional condition of wearing a GPS tether.
Hershberger, 29, was found dead inside her home at Franklin Woods Mobile Home Park on 13th Street on Monday afternoon. Preliminary autopsy results revealed that she died from a gunshot wound.
Investigators have confirmed that Hershberger and Alvarado were in a relationship at the time of her death. The investigation is ongoing.
