Fatal crash on U.S. 20 bypass claims life of Nappanee man

A three-vehicle crash on the U.S. 20 bypass in Elkhart County claimed the life of a Nappanee man and sent another to the hospital with injuries.

The collision occurred just before 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 31, east of County Road 13.

According to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office, a 2017 Volvo semi-truck driven by a Chicago man rear-ended a 2004 Jeep Liberty. The impact forced the Jeep into the back of a 2024 Ford F-550, causing significant damage to both the front and rear of the Jeep.

The driver of the Jeep, 64-year-old Jerry Lamb of Nappanee, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the vehicle suffered a laceration to the back of the head and was transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital.

The driver of the Ford F-550 was not injured. The driver of the semi, was also unhurt.

The crash remains under investigation.
