New lawsuit targets Gov. Whitmer over vacant state senate seat

A new lawsuit has been filed against Governor Gretchen Whitmer over the State Senate seat that has been unoccupied for more than 7 months.

A Saginaw County attorney is suing Governor Whitmer over the continued vacancy in Michigan’s 35th Senate District, according to Bridge Michigan. State law dictates only the governor can call a special election for a long-vacant seat, something she hasn’t done for what her critics call political reasons.

The lawsuit says the lack of a special election “undermines public trust” and “erodes the legitimacy of enacted laws” while the people of that district lack representation in the State Senate.

The complaint demands a special election be held in the next seven days.
