LaPorte County Jail

The driver of the box truck that struck the New Prairie JV baseball team is now facing new charges.

Documents say Shawn Akison was under the influence of fentanyl at the time of the crash that happened in May.

Reports say he seemed to stare off with slow and lethargic responses while being questioned.

Now, he’s facing four felony charges including causing catastrophic innjury when operating while intoxicated, causing serious bodily injury when operating while intoxicated, two charges of criminal recklessness and two misdemeanor charges of operating while intoxicated.

Two coaches and seven athletes were hurt in the crash, with one player being seriously injured. Akison’s bond has been upgraded to $20,000 cash.
