Investigation continues after fatal four-vehicle crash in Elkhart County

Authorities are continuing to investigate a four-vehicle crash that left two people dead at the intersection of County Road 40 and County Road 17 on August 29.

According to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office, preliminary findings indicate a vehicle traveling eastbound on County Road 40 failed to stop at the intersection, colliding with two vehicles traveling north and south on County Road 17. One of those vehicles then flipped and struck another northbound vehicle.

Two people; Steven Perez, 21, of Elkhart and Donna Rae Gushwa, 69, of Milford died at the scene. Police say Perez was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from his vehicle.

Two other individuals were transported to Elkhart General Hospital with injuries, including reports of possible broken bones.

The crash remains under investigation by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Team.
