A former Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office employee has turned herself in for theft.

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office says former employee Haley Atherton turned herself in Tuesday on warrants for Theft and Official Misconduct, both Level 6 felonies.

Atherton, a former Booking Specialist at the county jail, was booked and released on bond. Investigators say a discrepancy in the jail’s inmate trust fund led to the discovery of suspicious debit card transactions.

Authorities say Atherton created cards using funds from accounts of inmates already released. Detectives say Atherton admitted taking the money because of financial struggles, reportedly using it for meals and a vehicle.
