A man charged with murdering his 2-year-old son will undergo psychiatric evaluations.

37 year old Ryan Snyder of Elkhart was arrested on July 7 after an 18-hour standoff with police that ended with the death of his son, Jaxon.

Officers were first called July 6 after the children’s mother reported Snyder had made alarming threats during a video call.

During Thursday’s hearing, Snyder’s attorney asked that his psychiatric sessions not be recorded; the judge agreed.

Two court-appointed psychologists will assess Snyder’s mental state and consider an insanity defense.

The Goshen News says Snyder’s trial is set for January 5 but could be delayed.

The insanity defense should be abolished.
