An Elkhart County man has pleaded guilty but mentally ill in the death of his 2-year-old son.

Ryan Snyder, 37, now faces up to 45 years in prison for neglect and criminal recklessness.

Police found the child dead in Snyder’s home after an 18-hour standoff last July.

Snyder admitted he accidentally suffocated his son by lying on top of him for about 15 minutes.

Snyder’s sentencing is set for Jan. 8.
