Smoke alarms are being credited with alerting residents to an early morning house fire.
It happened around 6:35 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 8, on John Street near Waukonda.
Responding units from the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety arrived to find smoke coming from the attic and confirmed an active attic fire. Crews quickly brought the blaze under control. No injuries were reported.
Investigators say the fire appears to have been electrical in nature.
BHDPS received assistance from the St. Joseph Department of Public Safety, Benton Charter Township Fire Department, Lincoln Charter Township Firefighters, and Medic 1 Ambulance.
Officials also noted that BHDPS partners with MI Prevention and can help residents obtain working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
