Michigan is home to new Chessboxing World Champion

White wins at chess.

It doesn’t sound like a real sport, but it is. And Michigan has the new world champion.

It’s called chessboxing, and it’s exactly what it sounds like. It blends chess strategy with boxing.

Bridge Michigan reports the hybrid sport combines the two disciplines into the same match, alternating rounds of speed chess with boxing. Matches are won by checkmate, knockout or by time running out in chess.

James Canty III, 33, of Detroit has only competed in the sport for three years, but has now won the super heavyweight chessboxing world championship at a match in Serbia.

He says his next goal is to level up to Grandmaster in chess, and work with Chessboxing’s Team USA.
