A 16-year-old is being charged as an adult in connection with an attempted robbery that led to a shooting over the weekend in Michigan City, according to new filings in La Porte County court.

Court documents identify the suspect as Darrien Washington, 16, who prosecutors allege took part in an attempted robbery that left a man with a gunshot wound on Sunday. Washington faces three charges: Robbery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, a Level 2 felony; Aggravated Battery Causing Serious Permanent Disfigurement, a Level 3 felony; and Dangerous Possession of a Firearm by a Child, a misdemeanor.

A bail hearing is scheduled for Jan. 13, with another court hearing set for Feb. 19.

According to police, the victim told investigators he was approached by five males in dark clothing and tackled from behind by one of them during the attempted robbery. The victim reported that the group pointed firearms at him and demanded his belongings, and that one gun appeared to jam before several shots were fired as he ran from the scene.

The victim was struck in the right buttocks and described being in extreme pain. He was later transferred to another hospital for treatment.

Police say further investigation led to Washington being identified as a suspect. A search warrant later led to the recovery of multiple firearms, including the weapon believed to have been used in the shooting.

The Michigan City Police Department reports the case remains active and under investigation.
