Police investigate early-morning shooting on South Bend’s northwest side

The South Bend Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit is investigating an early-morning shooting on the city’s northwest side.

Officers were dispatched to the 1500 block of Portage Avenue around 2:20 a.m. Saturday after multiple ShotSpotter alerts indicated gunfire in the area. While en route, officers were informed that a shooting had occurred.

Upon arrival, officers located an adult male suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to a hospital for treatment. His condition was not immediately released.

Police say several people were in the area at the time of the shooting and are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward. Crime Stoppers tips that lead to an arrest may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
