Notre Dame Football Coach Marcus Freeman accused of battery

Notre Dame head football coach Marcus Freeman has been accused of battery following an incident at a high school wrestling tournament in Mishawaka.

Mishawaka police say a battery report was filed after an incident at the Al Smith Wrestling Invitational on Jan. 3 at Mishawaka High School.

According to the South Bend Tribune, the report involves Freeman and New Prairie High School assistant wrestling coach Chris Fleeger. Freeman was attending the tournament to support his son.

Police say the incident occurred after Freeman’s son lost a match and was being escorted out of the gym. A verbal exchange reportedly led to alleged physical contact in a hallway. No details were released, and police later separated the parties.

Notre Dame Athletics denied any physical contact, saying Freeman intervened only to remove his son from a hostile situation. Police have turned the case over to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office to determine whether charges will be filed.

Mishawaka Police released the following statement:

As some of you are aware, there was an incident involving Notre Dame football Head Coach Marcus Freeman on January 3, 2026.  This was during the Al Smith wrestling meet at Mishawaka High School.  A battery report was filed with one of the Mishawaka Police officers working security at the event.  Mr. Freeman was listed as the suspect in the report. 
 
This report was investigated further by a detective with our department.  That investigation was completed.  The results of which were forwarded to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office for their review.   Because this case has not yet been resolved, nothing else will be released at this time.
