Heavy lake-effect snow expected through Thursday; whiteout conditions possible

Northern Indiana and Southwest Michigan are bracing for another round of lake-effect snow, with forecasters warning of heavy, persistent bands and dangerous travel conditions through Thursday morning.

Meteorologists expect snow bands to strengthen this afternoon and tonight as northwest winds push moisture off Lake Michigan. These long-lasting bands could produce 3 to 6 inches of snow in many areas, with the potential for a narrow corridor of more than 12 inches where the heaviest band remains stationary. Areas farther from the lake are likely to see significantly lower amounts, generally 1 to 3 inches.

Even locations with minimal accumulation may encounter hazards due to strong winds, blowing snow, and reduced visibility. Whiteout conditions, drifting, and slick roads are most likely tonight and during the Thursday morning commute.

Snow bands are expected to weaken to one or two lingering strips by early Thursday before skies become partly sunny later in the day. High temperatures will remain in the 20s.

The break from snow will be brief. A separate system is forecast to bring an additional 1 to 3 inches Thursday night into Friday morning, followed by the potential for another round of intense lake-effect snow heading into the weekend.
