An Indianapolis woman has been arrested in connection with a January pursuit that ended in a crash in Elkhart, according to Indiana State Police.

Nakia Adams, 26, of Indianapolis, faces charges of resisting law enforcement causing serious bodily injury and causing serious bodily injury with a Schedule I or II controlled substance in her system.

Indiana State Police completed its investigation and submitted the case to the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office. A warrant for Adams was issued August 31.

Adams was arrested at her Indianapolis home Tuesday morning, September 1, by the U.S. Marshals Service. She was taken to the Marion County Jail and is awaiting extradition to Elkhart County.

The case stems from an incident January 13, when an Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office deputy working an off-duty security assignment at a department store near Cassopolis Street and Emerson Drive was alerted to a suspected shoplifter.

Police say the woman, later identified as Adams, did not stop when confronted and entered a beige 2012 Buick SUV. Investigators say she backed the vehicle toward the deputy, put it in drive and fled the parking lot.

The deputy later located the Buick near Country Club Drive and Cassopolis Street. According to investigators, Adams disregarded a stop sign and fled south on Cassopolis Street, leading to a pursuit.

At about 12:15 p.m., the Buick collided with a dark gray Chevrolet at the intersection of Bristol Street and Cassopolis Street. The Chevrolet was entering the intersection from eastbound Bristol Street when it was struck on the driver’s side door.

The Chevrolet’s 17-year-old female driver was taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for treatment. Adams was transported to Elkhart General Hospital following the crash.

The Indiana State Police Area II Critical Incident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and conducted the crash investigation.

State police handled the investigation into the crash, the pursuit and potential criminal charges stemming from the incident.
