Michigan utility bills on the rise

(95.3 MNC)

Utility providers across Michigan are warning customers to expect higher bills after January’s bitter cold.

The first statements reflecting the frigid temperatures are now reaching customers.

WSJM says Henry Decker with DTE states it’s the reality of a cold winter and some people may see their highest bill of the year. He says increases could run over $50 more compared to previous months, depending on usage.

Decker says help is available for customers who are struggling, including payment plans and assistance programs through groups like the United Way and Salvation Army.

Customers in southwest Michigan are encouraged to contact their utility or dial 2-1-1 to find available financial-assistance programs.
