A man accused of a fatal shooting along the St. Joseph River in Elkhart could go to trial as early as this spring.

59-year-old Michael Hawkins Jr. is currently scheduled for a murder trial on May 4, though the judge says the case could be moved up if another murder trial is rescheduled.

Police say Hawkins is accused in the July 17 shooting death of 50-year-old Anthony Null.

The Goshen News says an autopsy determined Null died from a gunshot wound. Investigators say the two men had argued earlier that day, and witnesses reported hearing a gunshot before finding Null wounded.

Hawkins was later arrested and charged with murder. His trial is set for May 4.
