The Buchanan Police Department is warning the public about a rise in scam phone calls from people posing as law enforcement officers.
Scammers tell victims they have an arrest warrant and must pay immediately-often using Bitcoin or other nontraditional payment methods-to avoid being taken into custody.
They may also ask for personal information like Social Security numbers or dates of birth.
Police say no real law enforcement agency will ever request money or sensitive information over the phone.
If you receive one of these calls, you’re advised to hang up and report it to your local police.
