A tip from the public has led to an animal abuse investigation in Michigan City, now under review by prosecutors.
According to the Michigan City Police Department, officers and Michigan City Animal Control were alerted on January 28 to a video circulating on social media that appeared to show animal abuse. The video originated from neighborhood surveillance footage within the city and was shared publicly online.
Police say the report was taken seriously and acted on immediately. Within days, investigators and animal control officers identified the location of the incident, obtained additional surveillance footage, identified a suspect, and conducted a welfare check on the dog involved.
The investigation was coordinated by Investigative Division Commander Lt. Painter and has since been completed. The case has been formally submitted to the LaPorte County Prosecutor’s Office for a probable cause review.
Officials emphasized that the case highlights the importance of information provided by the public. Police say community members who report concerns and share information play a critical role in helping law enforcement and animal control respond quickly and effectively to cases of abuse or neglect.
The Michigan City Police Department and Animal Control also commended the officers, detectives, and animal control staff involved for their professionalism, teamwork, and swift response.
Additional information will be released as appropriate as the review process continues.
Authorities remind the public that tips can be submitted through the department’s Facebook Messenger, by calling the Michigan City Police crime tip hotline at (219) 873-1488, or through the WeTip Hotline at (800) 78-CRIME. Tipsters may remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward if an arrest and conviction result.
