One person is dead and another seriously injured following a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 65 beneath the 73rd Avenue overpass.

According to the Indiana State Police, troopers responded around 5:15 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14, to the crash on northbound I-65 near the 253.6 mile-marker.

Police say a yellow bus – a retired school bus converted into a recreational vehicle – was towing a passenger car when it struck a bridge support under the overpass. An SUV and a pickup truck were also involved in the crash.

The driver of the bus/RV suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the vehicle was airlifted by UCAN to the University of Chicago Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the SUV was not seriously hurt.

During the investigation, troopers said the driver of the pickup truck, David K. Rodgers, 48, of Gary, showed signs of alcohol impairment. Authorities initiated an operating while intoxicated investigation.

Police said Rodgers became combative and resisted troopers before being taken into custody. He was transported to a local hospital, where a search warrant was obtained for a blood draw. Afterward, he was taken to the Lake County Jail on a probable cause hold for Operating While Intoxicated involving a fatality.

The crash remains under investigation and reconstruction, and toxicology results are pending.

Indiana State Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has dash camera footage from the area to contact Trooper Hathaway at 219-696-6242.
