An Elkhart Community Schools bus driver has been placed on unpaid leave after being reported for suspected impairment while on duty.
According to the district, the employee was reported by another staff member on January 23 between bus routes. The driver was immediately removed from duty following the complaint.
School officials say they have been working closely with the Indiana State Police since the report was made.
In a statement, the district said it cannot release additional details because the matter could involve a criminal review. The driver will remain on unpaid leave while the investigation continues.
The district also announced it is conducting an internal review of its procedures, emphasizing that student safety concerns are taken seriously and safeguards will be evaluated.
Indiana State Police confirmed its Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division is handling the case. Troopers met with school officials to gather information, and once the investigation is complete, the findings will be sent to the prosecutor’s office for review.
No charges have been filed at this time.
