St. Joseph Township considers new youth sports complex

St. Joseph Township is considering a new 40-acre youth sports complex, but questions remain about how to pay for it.
Township officials estimate the project could cost between 8 and 10 million dollars and would be built in phases. The proposed site is vacant property near Maiden Lane and Hollywood Road.
Leaders plan to apply for a Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund grant to help cover most of the cost. They also say league pay-to-play fees would help with long-term maintenance.
Some residents have raised concerns about upkeep and the overall price tag.
The township has voted to apply for the grant and expects to learn by December whether funding will be approved. Officials say the project is still in the early stages.
