Valparaiso University will introduce a new artificial intelligence practitioner certificate program beginning in the fall of 2026.
The 12-credit, four-course program will be open to undergraduate students in all majors. University leaders say the goal is to teach both how AI systems work and how to use them ethically and effectively in the workplace.
Students will begin with a “Fundamentals of AI” course, followed by two electives such as machine learning or data mining. The program concludes with a capstone project designed to demonstrate real-world AI skills to employers.
Professor Haydar Cukurtepe said the university wants to lead, not follow, as AI reshapes industries. Faculty members emphasized that the program is designed for students in all fields — not just computer science.
University officials also stressed the importance of ethical AI use. Using AI to fully generate assignments without student effort violates the university’s honor code. Leaders say the program will focus on responsible and accurate application of AI tools.
Dean Gregg Johnson said understanding AI is quickly becoming an expectation in today’s job market and will help students lead and serve in their careers.
